Decided to get my car on a ramp at work today to look at the aux heater.

Looks ok, was going to take off to check the glowplug, had a look at the fuel pump for it and one of the wires going to it has corroded and so has the terminal on the pump, could be why it doesn't work!!

So, anyone got a spare pump? once I change the pump is there any easy way to reset the heater? leave it disconnected maybe??

Chances are it will start on it's own. You will just have to try a few times to get fuel through.

 

As far as spare pump goes, I can't help you with that.

:blink: The location of the fuel pump for the aux heater is completely stupid and heath robinson (hanging down exposed directly to max flow of road dirt etc) The terminals look really flimsy and have no form of protection whatsoever. I noticed heavy corrosion on mine and my car spends 90% of its life in a dry garage.

 

I suspect this might be a common failure.

finally got round to having a look at the broken pump.

 

I have a second hand one from work, I connected it to a bettery to test it but it just clicks and spits out a bit of fuel. Thought it was odd so I tried my original one and its the same. Is this how they work? or should they run constantly, seems strange that 2 should do this?

 

I thought that maybe they get pulses of power from the control unit so I fitted it anyway and bypassed the temp sensor (job and a half!) but still not working. :(

 

If someone can help and confirm whether this is normal pump operation or not, if ok I will change the glowplug next.

me thinks your pump is working ok, they do click as they work quite fast for the 1st phase of heating then a slower click later on maybe one click a second on the 2nd phase. the fuel is then spit out in pulses rather that a constant flow.i think this is correct.

hi, thanks for the replies.

I connected the heater to a battery whilst off the car and it clicked once and spat out some fuel, this is all it did. It did not continue to click. Both the pumps I have do the same thing??

I think its to do with the heater, it drives the fuel pump in pulses quick to start in choke mode then slows down when running and warmed up. :(

But the problen is I think is that if it has failed to start a few times and (someone ages ago said 3 times I think but don't quote me on it), you have to go to a Fraud dealer to have it reset. My vag com cannot access it and your local VW dealer his gear will not access a Ford system either, :( because Fraud blocked it, typical why they could not leave it with Siemens own system no one knows, except come to me your dealer and I will charge you
